Kim Adams, high school science teacher, oversees BMU”s community garden. She has been leading this adventure for the past three years. The garden benefited from Forrest Mathew and one of his math classes rebuilding the raised beds this past spring. Adams uses the garden in some of her science curriculum, including companion planting and information about crops. Adams thinks, “it’s really nice to get the kids involved in outdoor learning.” BMU’s garden provides fruit and vegetables for the community in the summer and refreshing watermelon for the elementary students to enjoy in the fall. With pumpkins harvested from the garden, the high school students will soon compete in a pumpkin decorating contest. According to Adams, “I definitely think it’s worth it. It’s nice to get kids outside whenever you can, and it’s nice to be able to teach them gardening skills, something they can take away and hopefully do at home.”
