RYEGATE- The Scotch Burn Farm is covering one of their corn bunks. The whole point of covering the corn is so it can later be used for feed. The process includes covering the compacted feed that has been dumped in the bunk so that it can ferment into silage. It’s important to make sure when pulling the plastic up on the pile that it’s tight to the concrete wall, then you put old tires on top of the plastic to hold it down to decrease the amount of oxygen that is in the bunk/feed. When all the edges are held down with tires and there is a good spread of tires in the middle, eventually there are enough weight on the plastic to hold it down. This helps with the quality, and decreases the amount of spoilage in the feed. Having a large quantity of high quality feed for cows is crucial to making milk.
