Lyndonville- Dan Daley is the Professor of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at Vermont State University(VTSU) Lyndon Campus. Daley is retiring in May after the academic year ends for VTSU, and is not being replaced. VTSU administrators have chosen to use online math courses, rather than in person instruction. Daley is voicing his concern for the incoming students stating that, ” My experience is many of our students who come here, not all but some, really have had some struggles with mathematics. So when they get here and they need to take college algebra or statistics or problem solving or whatever. It is that they really need some clear focused instruction.”
Although Daley is leaving, he is trying his best to prepare his students for any situation, “What I’ve been advising some students is and it’s simple advice, but they’re going to have to adjust; they’re going to have to understand that they can’t go in the with expectations that’s it’s going to be the same as a classroom.” Daley ended with, “In this day and age where I think our students need more math than less. You know we have a society where math is everywhere now in the world, everything from crypto currency to unemployment rates to voting…. and numbers are thrown at people all the time. You open the newspaper or listen to the news or listen to the radio [so] our students need more math not less.” According to Nolan Atkins, Provost Academic Affairs, “We staff courses with full and part-time faculty. We will staff the courses that professor Daley taught with other VTSU faculty.” Atkins added, “We make staffing decisions based on the number of students we have and the courses they need to take. From there, we ensure that there are enough faculty to teach the courses.” This is the current plan based on on staffing needs.
