Sigel- Three BMU students, Luke Peters, Jacob Emerson, and Kris Fennimore, traveled two states over with family and friends to Sigal, PA, to try and accomplish something many people never get to experience. These boys have been hunting all their lives in Vermont and New Hampshire, and even Maine this year for Peters and Fennimore, but having no luck there, they set out for the 9 hour drive to PA. Peters has this to say about hunting in the Allegheny Mountains, “We see a lot more deer, but you got to work a little bit more for them; it’s different to get out of state and it’s pretty damn fun.” Peters has had the opportunity to hunt in PA for 5 years now, Emerson for 4 years, and Fennimore for 2 years. These hunters have had a great deal of success hunting in the Allegheny Mountains, harvesting multiple deer in the steep mountain terrain. This year the sportsmen were able to catch up with 4 deer, 2 of them bucks and the other 2 does.
However, with the all positives there’s also negatives. In 2012, Pennsylvania discovered Chronic Waste Disease (CWD), and the disease is still spreading. PA has taken measures to try and stop the spreading; if you are an out of state hunter, you can not take any of the brain, eyes, and spinal cord tissue back to your home state. They also have check points at the borders to make sure no possible CWD crosses state lines.
