Emilie Knisley, BMU Middle and High School Principal, has banned blankets in school effective December 11, 2023. Many people had come to Knisley with concerns about the hygiene of people bringing the blankets into the bathroom and then back to class. Also, there is a rule in the elementary grades which prohibits students from bringing their own blankets to school; therefore, it isn’t fair that older students could bring blankets. According to Knisley, “We are not having blankets because we want people to feel safe and keep the school environment clean.” Nyx Desrochers, BMU junior, disagrees with the rule, “Blankets are cozy and warm, literally my best friend.” Nyx does agree that students should not be bringing blankets into the bathroom though. Michael Scruton, BMU senior, agrees with the new rule, “I think it got out of hand. Too many people were bringing blankets to school and weren’t treating them properly. [Students were] using them and wearing them in places they shouldn’t be wearing or using them.”
