BMU has had many different schedules over the years. Most recently, BMU has had A days and B days, then gold days and blue days. During those schedules, students had up to eight different classes that lasted the entire year. This year we have the same schedule every day with some classes lasting 90 minutes a day for a semester, and other classes 45 minutes a day that will last the entire year. Some people are enjoying this new schedule. Forrest Matthews, BMU math teacher, thinks our current schedule is an improvement over our previous gold and blue days. Matthews prefers only prepping three classes at a time instead of six. The current schedule provides teachers a prep period each day, when in the past he had a prep every other day. Matthews states, “Students have been able to learn more material in less time.” In the past, many classes could only meet once a week due to sudden changes in the schedules. He doesn’t, “Think there will ever be a perfect schedule that everyone loves, but hopefully we can figure out a good enough schedule that everyone can reasonably live with.” Also, Matthews thinks that time will make the schedule easier, “If we stick with the same basic schedule, we’ll be able to focus on working the bugs out, rather than rebuilding from scratch.”
Kimberely Adams, BMU science teacher, likes the schedule, but believes it has pros and cons. Adams utilizes the extra class time, “As a science teacher, I like having classes be at least 60 minutes so we can complete labs.” However, she wishes she had students for the entire year and not just a semester. She also does think students should have more time to transition. “They don’t need much longer, but a minute or two more between transitions would allow students to get a mental break for a moment, and have access to the water fountain and bathrooms for a bio break.” The new schedule has seemed to be very helpful so far this school year.
