Lily Mclure, a BMU junior, was recently accepted into the Harvard Summer School program. The Harvard Summer Program is a college program that allows high school students to experience college life and get 4-8 college credits. The requirements to get into the Harvard summer school are, writing four to five application essays, including a solid academic record and you have to turn 16 before summer starts. Harvard also offers a pre-college program that is for high-school students as well however Lily will not be attending that program as it is a two-week program rather than a four to seven-week program like the one she is doing. The schedule for the program is not set in stone yet but they are offering classes like environmental science, an economics class, and a race and gender in medicine class. All of these focus on the inequalities and problems in these areas and teach potential solutions and why the issues are important. McLure is currently ranked first academically in the junior class. When asked what her plans are she said, “I’m leaning strongly toward paramedic, but that is not a high-paying career and doesn’t require a college-level education, so my top second choice is trauma surgeon”. McLure’s top college choices at the moment are Harvard or St. Michaels, she is looking for schools that offer on-campus EMS ( Emergency Medical Services) classes or that offer EMS and paramedicine classes. Currently, Lily is involved in the National Honor Society, cheerleading, and Upward Bound at BMU.
