Spanish students attended a field trip to Ballet Hispanico for Hispanic History Month; when interviewed, Montague explained that “Ballet Hispánico opens a platform for new cultural dialogue [and] nurtures inspiring young dancers.” It also “champions and amplifies the Latin American experience through stunningly choreographed dance.”
While at Ballet Hispanico, BMU students learned about the program and received a dance lesson. Everyone enjoyed themselves dancing and learning about Hispanic history and culture. Student Jackson Greene shared that the experience was “fun.” He explained that “they had us do a dance and stuff.”
A field trip like this provides students with the opportunity to learn using hands-on experiences and provides an authentic space to work on their Spanish skills. This field trip highlights the care that Montague puts into teaching BMU students about Hispanic heritage, language, and arts. Her yearly Spanish field trips are important for learning because to learn a language, one can’t just hear the words; instead, they need to feel them.
Montague says dance is a great way to come together. With this in mind, two more field trips were scheduled, during which exchange students from Spain visited Oxbow and BMU. As a way to have fun and spend time together, the students danced!
