Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton caused extensive damage and permanent closures to many schools. To support the affected students, Julie Gandin, a part-time guidance counselor, is collaborating with The Great Kindness Challenge to bring the Undy 500 clothing drive to BMU. This non-profit organization is an international anti-bullying program that encourages school children to perform acts of kindness. The Undy 500 program is focused on having schools commit to collecting 500 pairs of socks and underwear for hurricane relief. The drive’s aim is to provide BMU students and parents with a meaningful way to assist students in need.
The Student Council Advisor, Michelle Kalnins (Ms. K), knew the Undy 500 was a great opportunity for the student council to help a good cause. Madalyn Houghton, BMU Student Council President, explains “the best way to get students involved” in the Undy 500 drive “is to make it a class challenge.” By giving additional incentive to the students to donate, Ms. K and the student council hope to encourage students to donate more packs. Ms. K believes if BMU works together as a community “we should be able to hit the goal of 500.”
While the “Undy 500” has no set deadline, the drive will run until the end of October. The hope is that BMU will complete it as quickly as possible. Donations can be dropped off in a box located near the front of the building, next to the trophy case, where flyers with more information are also available.
