BMU’s Boston field trip is an annual school event held each April, offering high school students a full-day excursion to explore the city’s rich cultural scene. Students visit art museums, attend live performances, and experience the vibrant history and atmosphere of Boston.
Retired music teacher Jean Shields created this trip roughly 15 years ago. Today, the trip is first offered to students enrolled in art-related classes like: ceramics, creative drawing, chorus, band, and theater. Then, if there are remaining seats, they are offered to other interested high schoolers. “It’s always a really fun trip for everyone involved; this year I think it will be extra fun,” Blue Mountain art teacher Jennifer Dube shared.
On the trip, students visit a variety of places, starting with a college tour of Vermont State University Castleton. Then, students stop along the way at a local mall for lunch and, if time permits, shopping. Once in Boston, students visit the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, tour Fenway Park, eat dinner at Quincy Market, and then finish the night off with a musical or play. This year, students are seeing Shrek the Musical at The Company Theater in Norwell MA. Coincidentally, most of the cast from the same play BMU just put on is going on the trip.
“This trip is a great way to give students a chance to be more independent as well,” Dube said. When students go to the Quincy Market for dinner, they are given an hour to explore the market, which contains various cultural food items. BMU student Madalyn Houghton, who has attended the trip all four years of high school, adds “My favorite part of the trip is the art museum. On each visit, I find new pieces that I hadn’t noticed before. I also love trying all the different foods at Quincy Market. Every year, I make it a point to try something new.”
Dube shares, “I love taking students on this trip because it’s not only fun but also incredibly educational. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore various aspects of art, music, and culture.”
