“Goats on the Moon” ~ Music and Lyrics by Steve Davie

For worse or better ends, when Homo Sapiens
First jumped and fell and dusted up their knees,
We knew we would return, buoyed above the rocket burn
Even if we had to learn to speak Chinese.
Long before countdown and launch, I was always the staunchest
Believer in that strange pastoral dream.
We’d build the domes and soon plant Terran grasses on the moon
And graze the goats on cratered beds of green.
Since ancient times acknowledged for their worth,
The most common dairy animal on Earth –

Now we’ve got goats on the moon, out there in the lunar browse.
Goats on the moon, so much more sensible than cows.
If our species will survive, through politics and pride,
There will be goats on the moon at milking time.

First chickens, cats and dogs, then ducks and cows and hogs,
They even tried to keep a sheep or two.
Somebody brought a horse – that didn’t work, of course,
But the obvious was left for me to do.
It’s quite a sight to see them frolic in low gravity,
They kick off and they’re gone against the sky.
And barely coming down, when a hoof just touches ground,
They’re gone again, you’d swear that they can fly.
So picturesque in Earth-light’s soft blue-green,
And those tourists out from Earth will pay to see –

That we’ve got goats on the moon, out there in the lunar browse.
Goats on the moon, so much more sensible than cows.
If our species will survive, through politics and pride,
There will be goats on the moon at milking time.
