Morning Chores at the Scotch Burn Farm

RYGATE-Morning milking at the Scotch Burn Farm starts at 4:00 AM.

  • 4:00 AM Start
  • Push cows around in the 1st barn into the holding area
  • Clean out alleyways in the barn/ feed the cows in the first barn
  • Setup the milk room and parlor to start milking
  • Once you have set up, start milking
  • Once the 1st group is milked switch over the gates and begin milking the 2nd group
  • Push the cows around in the 2nd barn
  • Clean out the 2nd barn
  • Feed the cows in the 2nd barn
  • Milk the cows in the 2nd group
  • Mix feed for the lunch load
  • When done milking all the cows shut down
  • Save the milk from shutting down to feed the calfs
  • Once all cows are done milking and back in their group switch the gates back to normal
  • Wash down the parlor and shut down

The chores take three people, one person doing the outside part of the chores and two people milking the cows. Every dairy farmer knows there is never a set time when you get done milking cows; sometimes you can get done at 6:30am sometimes you get done at 10:00 am. As of right now, the Scotch Burn Farm is milking 230 cows.

Derek VanNAmee is a Junior this year at BMU and has been going to BMU since pre-school. This is his second year working with BNN. Derek enjoys working on Ethan Nelson's dairy farm in Ryegate, VT. He milks cows, is one of the equipment operators, and does other things around the farm. Derek enjoys a number of outdoor activities such as hunting deer and turkeys, fishing, and snowmobiling. He also enjoys working on antique tractors which he sometimes enters in pulling competitions.
